Google+

Google started to include Google+ pages in their search results this past week.  While everybody saw this coming, many of us were curious as to exactly how they’d go about it in light of others already crying foul on how they present search results in a manner that gives them a competitive advantage.  After all, who knows better how to search optimize a profile for Google better than, well, Google?

It appears that they’ve addressed this issue by starting to include the Google+ page in the search results as a subpage of the search result for the .com itself.  A quick search of a company like T-Mobile returns their .com listing, with a subpage listing for their Google+ page.  This essentially creates ads (complete with the color profile image – making the listing pop) for their services.

What does this mean for a practice like yours?  It could allow you to turn the Google+ page for your practice into a feed of promotions and specials within the search results.  Sort of like a social Adwords, except with color images…and without the hefty Adwords bill.  And, all you need to do to get started is setup a Google+ page for your practice.

Where should my practice devote more of our time; Google Plus or Facebook?

Excellent question Alan! Right now, Facebook is still the king of social networking with around 12x the user-base that Google+ has established thus far. So, at this point, Facebook should probably be getting more of your attention since it currently gives you a greater opportunity to reach more new patients. And, since Google+ is still in it’s nascent stages, you won’t want to put all of your eggs into a still unproven basket. However, we do recommend our doctors establish a presence on Google+ and familiarize themselves with how it works. That way, if-and-when Google+ does begin to reach critical mass (which we believe they can accomplish), they’ll be in a great position to utilize Google+ to reach new patients as El Goog’s social network continues to grow. Which, it’s currently doing at a rate that Facebook has never achieved in their own history!
