Google+ +625k New Users a Day.

Something interesting is happening in social networking. We all know Facebook is the king of the social networks. It has over 800M users and, when it makes it’s initial public offering in 2012, will likely be the largest IPO since Google. But, don’t count that old-fashioned search-engine out just yet…
2011 welcomed the launch of Google+. We’ve commented on it before, but have been blunt about the fact it has a very large uphill battle in front of it in order to even make a dent in the social juggernaut that is Facebook. Google+ made it’s mid-year debut in slow fashion by only handing out invites to a small number of users before opening up to the public in September. A month later Google acknowledged it had hit 40M users on Google+. While there have been reports of a decrease in traffic, there are also reports that they’ve now eclipsed 60M users and are growing at 625k users a day. Still only a fraction of Facebook’s total numbers – but over twice Facebook’s fastest growing month ever.
The reason is an often overlooked one – Google already has more users than Facebook. Now, it’s just a matter of transitioning them into Google+. Aside from the fact that over 1B people visit Google each month in order to search the Internet, there are already over 260M people with Gmail accounts for their email. And, guess what these Gmail accounts are starting to turn into? Yup, Google+ accounts. Add to that the ability to +1 websites, Google+ pages for businesses (i.e. – your practice!), and the potential to tie Google+ accounts into both search results and the ability to leave online reviews…and Google doesn’t even have to worry about how effective their new Google+ TV ads are at competing directly against Facebook on a pure social network playing field. They don’t have to worry about going head-to-head with the mighty Facebook because they already have a backdoor into the social game.
As we’ve stated here before, time will tell whether Google+ will be a player on the social networking scene, whether it will become another shelved experiment like Google Health. But, those people at Google are pretty bright, so we figure it’s at least worth setting up a free Google+ profile for your practice in order to stay ahead of the competition.
