Hi:
It is very normal to be nervous before getting your first cavity done. I myself get nervous sometimes before dental work some times. You should defiantly ask you dentist to place numbing jelly before they inject you with the needle. If the numbing jelly is rubbed in well then the needle can be virtually painless. Another factor that plays a role is the location of the cavity. To numb the lower jaw is a bit more uncomfortable than the top. However, just think about it, you may feel 5 seconds of discomfort and in return you will feel nothing for the remainder of the procedure. Also, not knowing what to except with this being your first filling is normal. After this experience you will probably be a lot less anxious in the future. There are defiantly other tools your dentist can use, like laughing gas. Laughing gas can really relax the most nervous of the patients. Just remember to relax and take deep breathes and before you know it it will be over. Being more anxious will only make you harder to numb. Good luck :)))
