Questions & Answers Q&A

A. Many people experience discomfort to some degree when their teeth are exposed to cold things. This is not always a sign that root canal is needed. In fact, more often than not it is either a cavity (but not so deep it needs root canal) or a tooth or teeth that have some of the root exposed due to gum recession. Roots are not covered by enamel which serves as an insulator and so exposed roots will react to temperature changes. If the cause of the sensitivity is due to root exposure, using a desensitizing toothpaste, such as Sensodyne, will alleviate the problem over a few weeks of use. If it's a cavity, you need to see a dentist quickly if you wish to avoid root canal. The longer you wait, the more the cavity grows and if it gets too close to the nerve you WILL need a root canal.
I hope this helps!

A. Bleeding gums occur with flossing for several possible reasons. First, and most commonly, is that the gums are inflamed (red and swollen) from the bacteria and tartar on the teeth, both at the gumline and in the space between the gum and the tooth (where the little brown hulls of popcorn frequently get lodged). These bacteria are living critters that excrete their waste on and under the gums. This stuff is toxic and the body's reaction in 80% of the adult population is red, swollen and bleeding gums.
Another possibility is improper flossing technique. Improper techniques, such as "shoe-shining" with the floss or not curling it around the tooth surface before entering the space between the tooth and gum will traumatize the tissue and cause bleeding.
A third possibility is a problem with your general health. Certain general conditions can be behind this type of problem.
So, what should you do?
The first thing I'd recommend is visit your dentist and have your gum health evaluated. Show them how you floss as well. If there is no dental reason found for the bleeding, it's time to see your physician for further investigation. Jeff Goldstein, DMD

What are Lumineers?

If you are not satisfied with your teeth and need an instant smile makeover, Lumineers may be for you. Similar to traditional veneers, Lumineers are made of exceptionally thin porcelain and applied directly to the unprepared tooth. Unlike conventional porcelain veneers, where the patient’s enamel is filed down, Lumineers are painlessly bonded to the front of the natural tooth; therefore, no anesthesia is required.

It’s that time again! Every six months, we are supposed to go to the dentist to get a cleaning. Sometimes, we have to go more than that if you need a new filling or want to bleach your teeth. Whatever the reason, there are a barrage of things that go through your mind about ten minutes before you walk in.

“Did I brush my teeth this morning?”

“Oh gosh, I haven’t flossed in the last six months, better do it today.”

“Do I need to bring money?”

Well, here are a few pointers on how to have a good... read more

Periodontal Exam | Jeffrey N. Goldstein | Dentist | Penndel, PAThree two three. Three two four. Have you heard these numbers being called out during your last dental cleaning visit? Do you know what they mean? If not, you should! (Hint: we are not learning to waltz!) These numbers represent a periodontal charting/probing that should be done at least once a year by your dental hygienist or dentist.  Why? Taking and recording these measurements is the only way to ensure that a person is free of gum disease or receiving the appropriate care for their gum... read more
