Questions & Answers Q&A

A. It is actually very common. Many people have gingivitis, which is an infection of the gums. I would suggest you see a dentist and have a comprehensive exam. You may have gingivitis, periodontitis (infection of the supporting bone around the tooth) or you may have a serious medical condition that needs to be addressed that is causing your gums to bleed. Brushing and flossing are not the problem.

Q: What got you into this specific medical field?
A: My Aunt Martha was a dental assistant and my family and I saw the dentist she worked for. I know that she enjoyed her work and helped people. When I was in the eighth grade I wrote my career book on becoming a dentist. I did a complete study on what it took to become a dentist and what I would do. I liked the idea of working with people, helping them, owning my own business and being able to work with my hands and my brain. My parents always... read more

At Dental Health Associates in Sylvania, this is one of the most common questions we hear. While it’s really never too early, most children should have their initial appointment by around their first birthday.

A good rule of thumb is that when your baby’s first tooth appears, you should call to schedule an appointment. No, there’s not a lot of cleaning to be done yet, but the dental professionals at Dental Health Associates can provide... read more

It’s that time again! Every six months, we are supposed to go to the dentist to get a cleaning. Sometimes, we have to go more than that if you need a new filling or want to bleach your teeth. Whatever the reason, there are a barrage of things that go through your mind about ten minutes before you walk in.

“Did I brush my teeth this morning?”

“Oh gosh, I haven’t flossed in the last six months, better do it today.”

“Do I need to bring money?”

Well, here are a few pointers on how to have a good... read more

Hygienist applying dental sealants | William Huntzinger | Dentist | Sylvania Ohio

Teeth can be a very groovy thing... literally! The teeth in the back (the molars) tend to have a lot of grooves in the biting surface. Sometimes they are so narrow that a single toothbrush bristle cannot fit into them to clean them well. If bacteria is left in the grooves, eventually a cavity will form. To prevent this from happening, sealants are placed on the biting surface. A dental sealant is a viscous liquid that flows into all the grooves and then cures to a hard plastic and the grooves... read more
